As the Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Chief Election Officers (CEOs) of the states to finalise the preparations of the special intensive revision (SIR) in their respective states, the extensive poll roll revision exercise is likely to start this month.

According to a report by The Times of India, based on sources, the exercise will be held in a phased manner, and the first phase is likely to start within four to five days.

Each phase is likely to be concluded in nearly three months on the lines of one completed in Bihar. Reportedly, the states and UTs where nearly 70 to 80 per cent of the electorate has been mapped by matching the current roll with the entries of 2003-04, when the last revision was held, will be left out of the initial phase.

Along with that, states and UTs like J&K and Ladakh, which will be snow-clad in days to come, will also be left out in the initial phase.

"They can be taken up later as barely 20%-25% of electors in these states will need to submit documents to prove their eligibility as per Article 326 of the Constitution. The immediate priority will be the five states due for assembly polls next year," TOI quoted an Election Commission official as saying.

The timeline for the entire SIR exercise across the nation is likely to be finalised within a day or two, and the announcement is expected in four to five days.

However, it is expected that the states slated to go for elections next year, including Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal.

Given the controversy around the acceptance of Aadhaar in Bihar SIR, the document will be accepted as proof of identity, and the list of 11 documents used in Bihar will be used to file the enumeration form.

More documents may be included for the exercise that are unique to a given state/UT.
