Amid the ongoing spat with Rahul Gandhi over his 'vote chori' allegations, the Election Commission of India (EC) will hold a press conference on August 17 at 3:00 pm at the National Media Center in New Delhi.

The Director General of Media of the ECI has shared this information regarding the presser. During the press conference, the EC officials are likely to share important announcements and updates. These announcements can be about Bihar SIR, upcoming elections and voter list revision.

In the past few days, Rahul Gandhi has intensified his attack on the poll body alleging it to be working in collusion with the BJP.  It all started with the poll body's annoucnement of conducting the special intensive revision (SIR) in Bihar, an exercise to update the electoral roll by adding new voters and removing those who migrated or died.

The entire opposition, including the RJD, protested the exercise, raising concerns over its timing ahead of the assembly elections and that too within a short period.

The poll body however contested the claims stating that its a regular exercise that is necessary for updation. Later, Gandhi claimed that he has proof, equating it with an 'atom bomb'.

Gandhi exploded what he called an atom bomb in a press conference on August 7 with a presentation, alleging a vote theft of 1,00,250 votes in Mahadevapura assembly segment in Begaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency in 2024 general elections. His claims were trashed by the EC, and the Chief Electoral Officers of Karnataka, Maharashtra and UP issued a notice to Gandhji seeking a signed declaration with alleged proofs.

Gandhi's fact have all been denied by the poll body as lies and misinfornation. In his latest attack, Gandhi on Wednesday shared a video on social media in which he is seen talking to dead voters. He gave credit to the Election Commission for this meeting.

Posting the clip on Twitter, Gandhi wrote, "I have had many interesting experiences in my life but never had the chance to drink tea with 'dead people'. Thanks to Election Commission for this unique experience!"

The EC, which is a constitutional body and is bound to be neutral in its conduct, is facing two-way pushback from the opposition. The poll body, on one hand, is facing charges of adding fake voters in electoral rolls to ensure the BJP's victory in the 2024 general election, while on the other, it is facing heat over allegations of removing the names from the rolls through Bihar SIR, again to benefit the BJP.
