Election Results 2026: The results of the five assembly elections were announced on May 4. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended the 15-year-rule of the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal. While the BJP won 207 of the total 294 constituencies, the TMC could only manage to win 80 seats, its lowest in two decades. The saffron party also registered its third victory in a row in Assam under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma.

In Tamil Nadu, the actor-turned politician Vijay surprised many as his two-year-old TVK party emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 of the 234 seats. The DMK alliance could only manage to win 73 seats and party's supremo MK Stalin also faced an embarrassing defeat in Kolathur. The AIADMK remained at the third position by winning just over 50 seats.

The rise of Vijay is a clear transition in state's politics and has potentially ended the duopoly of the two traditional parties and has shifted. Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged victorious in Kerala by winning 100 of the 140 seats. The incumbent Left Democratic Front (LDF) could only manage to win 35 seats.
