GANGSTER-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed's son, Asad, was killed by the Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday. The police termed Asad's encounter as a "huge success".

However, this is not the only encounter that India has witnessed. On July 10, 2022, gangster Vikas Dubey was also killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Police as he allegedly tried to flee their custody.

Dubey had attacked a police raid team and his aides in Bikru village of Kanpur on July 2, 2020. Eight policemen were killed by the gangster and his aides in the attack.

Meanwhile, the first encounter of the counter dates back to 1982, when the 37-year-old gangster, popularly known as Manya Surve was killed in an encounter in Mumbai on January 11, 1982. Reportedly, the underworld don was one of the educated gangsters who graduated from Kirti College.

Who Was Manya Surve?

Manohar Arjun Surve, known as Manya Surve, was accused in a 1969 murder case. He was sentenced to life imprisonment along with his stepbrother Bhargav Dada.

Surve who was sent to Pune's Yerwada Central Jail, developed a rivalry with gangster Suhas Bhatkar (Potya Bhai). His terror tactics annoyed the prison authorities and he was transferred to Ratnagiri jail. Reportedly, he also took part in a hunger strike in jail and lost 20 kg. He was then shifted to the local civil hospital. However, taking full advantage of the opportunity, Surve escaped from the hospital on November 14, 1979.

His Return To The Underworld:

After returning to the streets of Mumbai (then Bombay), Surve along with his friends made a group, which was also joined by other gangsters including Uday Shetty. The group hit the headlines for the first time in 1980, when they stole an Ambassador car, and later used it o loot Rs 5,700 from the Laxmi Trading Company near Currey Road.

Besides heists and robberies, Surve was also involved in narcotics trafficking.

He was also involved in the killing of Dawood Ibrahim's brother Shabir Ibrahim Kaskar, who was killed on February 12, 1981.

Manya Surve's Encounter:

On January 11, 1982, Mumbai received a tip-off from Dawood Ibrahim about Surve arriving at a beauty parlor near the Ambedkar College junction. At nearly 1.30 p,m, as many as 18 Crime Branch officers split into three teams and waited for him to arrive. After about 20 minutes, Surve was spotted and found himself surrounded by several men. Before he could open fire, he was killed by police officers Raja Tambat and Isaque Bagwan who fired five bullets.
