All India Anna DravidaMunnetraKazhagam chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) met Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday and discussed several key issues regarding the alliance and Tamil Nadu assembly election. EPS also demanded the Bharat Ratna for Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, a renowned freedom fighter and social reformer. Apart from this, the former Tamil Nadu chief minister also urged the home minister to not meet the expelled AIADMK members like O Panneerselvam and TTV Dhinakaran. Earlier last week, AIADMK veteran KA Sengottaiyan also held a discussion with Shah and asked EPS to unite the factions for a "common goal".

One of the key demands that EPS raised in the meeting was the highest civilian award for the freedom fighter PasumponMuthuramalinga Thevar. The party has been demanding the Bharat Ratna for Thevar for the past several years. “I handed over a letter on behalf of @AIADMKOfficial strongly urging that the highest award of the Indian nation, #BharatRatna, be conferred upon the divine son PasumpponAiyaU.Muthuramalingam Thevar, who struggled for national liberation,” EPS stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Apart from the former chief minister, several other prominent leaders, including SP Velumani, KP Munusamy, C Ve Shanmugam, IS Inbadurai, M Thambidurai, and Dindigul C Srinivasan, were also part of the meeting. EPS also reportedly asked Shah to maintain a distance from the strangled leaders in the name of unification.

The meeting between the two veteran leaders is crucial, as the assembly election in Tamil Nadu is scheduled for the next year. The AIADMK and BJP have been outplayed in the last few polls in Tamil Nadu, including the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and 2021 state assembly election.
