To preserve Hindus and other religious minorities in the neighbouring country, a group of Hindu expatriates from Bangladesh urged the Indian government on Monday to "complete the unfinished population exchange" and demand UN sanctions on Bangladesh.

The group, which includes people of Bangladeshi origin living in Europe and North America and is affiliated with the Global Bengali Hindu Coalition, is visiting the Indian capital for meetings with political leaders to take up the targeting of the Hindu minority in Bangladesh following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August.

During a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents Club, members of the group announced a five-point "call to action" to defend Hindus, other religious minorities, indigenous people, and tribal communities "under the hostile and pro-jihadist illegal government in Bangladesh".

The group called on New Delhi to seek targeted UN sanctions on the "current illegal and hostile regime in Bangladesh because of its "proven misconduct and failure to preserve human rights and dignity of religious minorities," in addition to urging the Indian government to seek international intervention, including the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in Bangladesh to protect minorities.

To enable the safe relocation of displaced minority, the group demanded that the "unfinished population exchange with lands from the 1947 Partition" be completed. Additional information about the proposal was not included in a statement released by the group.

According to the group, the Indian government need to encourage the interim government in Bangladesh to establish "protected zones in Hindu-majority regions to ensure the safety and security" of minorities.
