Fact Check: As Bihar gears up for elections, a video has gone viral on social media, claiming that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated during a rally that "Rahul ji is engaged in ruining the country."
Vishvas News, in its investigation, found this claim to be false, and the viral clip has been edited. In the original video from March 2024, Kharge targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying, "Modi ji is engaged in ruining the country."
What is viral?
Facebook user Ramesh Verma Mauryavanshi shared the edited video on September 3, 2025, with the caption that "Kharge admitted Rahul Gandhi is ruining the country." The clip, only a few seconds long, shows Kharge allegedly saying in Hindi, (Translated) "Rahul ji is engaged in ruining the country."
Investigation
To investigate the authenticity of the viral video, we extracted the key frames and searched them using Google Lens. This led us to the original video uploaded on the Indian National Congress’s YouTube channel on March 3, 2024. The viral clip appears after the 29-second mark in the video, where Kharge can be clearly heard saying, "First of all, I want to say that today Modiji is engaged in ruining the country." Here, Kharge mentions in the beginning that he is speaking at the ‘Jan Vishwas Rally’ held at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. A board displaying the date March 3, 2024, is also visible behind Kharge in this video.
Upon searching with keywords and the time tool, we found another video of the ‘Jan Vishwas Rally’ on the YouTube channel of India Daily Live, uploaded on March 3, 2024. Here too, Kharge can be heard saying ‘Modi ji’, not ‘Rahul Ji'.
According to a Hindustan Times report dated March 4, 2024, “The “Jan Vishwas Maha Rally” was attended by a slew of top Opposition leaders — Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, party leader Rahul Gandhi, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad, former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and senior Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja.”
The official Congress website, inc.in, provides the full transcript of Kharge’s speech, which confirms he said ‘Modi ji,’ not ‘Rahul ji’.”
For further clarification, we also spoke to senior Congress leader Pranav Jha, who called this post fake and the clip edited.
The Facebook user 'Ramesh Verma Mauryavanshi', who shared the edited video, has over 34000 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News' investigation has revealed that this video of Mallikarjun Kharge is edited. Kharge never said “Rahul ji is engaged in ruining the country.” He referred to Prime Minister Modi during the rally in March 2024.
