After a clash between a group of farmers heading towards Delhi and Haryana Police at the Shambhu Border on Friday, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has announced another march to the national capital on Sunday. Sarwan Singh Pandher, president of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, stated that they waited until Saturday evening for talks with the central government, but seeing no meaningful progress, they have decided to send a second group of 101 farmers, who will march peacefully towards Delhi on foot at 12 pm on Sunday.
Pandher raised a question, stating that earlier, both the central and Haryana governments had set a condition that farmers would only be stopped if they travelled to Delhi with tractors or trailers. He asked why they were being stopped when they were marching towards Delhi peacefully on foot.
Farmers Criticise Agriculture Minister's Claims
Pandher also criticised Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Chauhan and other BJP leaders who have been claiming in TV statements that talks with farmers are ongoing. He pointed out that the farmers have not been invited for any discussions. According to Pandher, the government’s claim of providing a 50 per cent Minimum Support Price (MSP) was insufficient and did not even cover the cost of sowing crops.
Dallewal's Hunger Strike At Khauri Border
Meanwhile, at the Khauri Border in Sangrur district, the hunger strike of Jagjeet Singh Dallewal entered its 13th day on Sunday. Doctors monitoring his health reported that his weight had dropped by 8.5 kilograms, and his kidney function, along with his blood sugar and blood pressure levels, were not stable.
Security Tightened At Borders
At the Haryana-Punjab border, especially at Shambhu and other key entry points, Haryana Police have heightened security to prevent farmers from marching towards Delhi. Along with the Shambhu Border, security measures have been intensified at several other borders, including Dattasinghwala, Khanouri and the border areas of Sirsa district adjoining Punjab and Rajasthan.
Iron grills at the Shambhu Border have been welded for reinforcement and water cannons, tear gas shells and other measures have been put in place. Riot control vehicles have also been deployed at the Tikri Border. Additionally, 21 checkpoints have been set up at the border areas near Sirsa district, with over a thousand paramilitary forces stationed there.
