A political controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh over an alleged fish feast organised during a welcome programme for state Congress president Ajay Rai in Ayodhya. The BJP has accused the Congress of hurting religious sentiments, while the Opposition has dismissed the row as an attempt to divert attention from other issues.

The controversy followed a video that reportedly showed fish being prepared at a banquet hall where Rai was welcomed by members of the Nishad community. The event took place during the ongoing Sawan month, a period considered sacred by many Hindus.

The alleged fish feast soon turned into a political flashpoint, with the BJP and Congress trading barbs over the event.

CM Yogi Adityanath Attacks Ajay Rai

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday launched a scathing attack on Ajay Rai over the alleged fish feast at the Ayodhya programme.

CM Yogi accused the Congress leader of "duplicity", pointing to Rai's visit to Hanumangarhi to offer prayers before allegedly attending an event where fish was served.

He also criticised the Congress over what he described as its approach to religion, politics and law and order.

"You saw the behaviour of the Congress state president: he goes to offer prayers at Hanumangarhi, but later outside he enjoys a feast of fish. He could have eaten whatever he wanted outside – anywhere other than Ayodhya. Yet, this is the duplicity they display."

Taking a further swipe at Rai, the Chief Minister said, "Even a chameleon would be put to shame by these people; it would wonder what kind of human species this is – chanting 'Ram-Ram' inside the temple and feasting on fish the moment they step out."

What Rai Said

Responding to Yogi's criticism, Rai rejected the allegation and challenged the Chief Minister to produce photographic evidence.

"The CM is criticising; does the CM have any photos? If he can produce any pictures, I will be ready to resign immediately," Rai said.

Explaining his presence at the Ayodhya event, Rai said he had been invited by the Nishad Samaj to attend the programme.

"Nishad Samaj invited me to a programme in Ayodhya yesterday. If they were getting fish prepared there, it would be their concern. I attended the programme and returned," Rai said.
