The Boeing 737 Max 8 landed safely around 9:40 am, was refuelled, and departed for Kathmandu at 10:17 am, arriving in the Nepali capital at 11:14 am.

The aircraft was holding over Nepalese airspace when the pilots squawked 7700 — a transponder code indicating an emergency or abnormal situation to Air Traffic Control (ATC).

According to a source, the flight performed at least five holding patterns approximately 50 km south of Kathmandu, near Nijgadh, before declaring the emergency. After receiving clearance from ATC, the aircraft proceeded to Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (CCSIA) in Lucknow.

"It was not immediately clear why the aircraft was compelled to hover for an extended period in Nepal airspace, though inclement weather might have been a factor," added the source.
