Flood Fury: Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader and Lok Sabha LoP, on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to immediately announce a special relief package for Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh in the wake of devastation in these states due to floods.

Gandhi posted a note on X with a video message, saying, "Modi Ji, the floods in Punjab have caused devastating destruction. The situation in Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal, and Uttarakhand is also extremely worrying. In such difficult times, your attention and the active help of the Central government are extremely necessary. Thousands of families are struggling to save their homes, lives, and loved ones."

He further urged that an immediate announcement be made for a special relief package (Special Relief Package) for these states, especially for the farmers - and that relief and rescue operations be expedited.

"It is saddening to see people struggle to save their families. Modi Ji it is the responsibility of the government to protect people. Immediately prepare a special relief package for the protection of these people," Gandhi is heard as saying in his video message.

Devastating Flood Ravages Punjab And Other States

Meanwhile, the Monsoon fury continued to wreak havoc in the northern states, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Jammu and Kashmir. These states have been reeling under devastating floods caused by serial cloudbursts and incessant heavy rains for the past few weeks.

The swollen Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and seasonal rivulets have flooded large parts of Punjab following heavy rain in their catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. According to officials, Punjab received 253.7 mm of rain in August, 74 per cent in excess of normal and the state's highest in 25 years, compelling to lakhs of people to take shelter in the government's flood relief camps.
