Former Union Minister Smriti Irani on Tuesday attended a Special Needs Sports Competition organised by the Higashi Autism School (HAS) to mark International Disabilities Day on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. The former Minister of Women and Child Development and Minority Affairs expressed admiration for the resilience and joy of children with special needs participating in the event and praised the dedication of HAS faculty and management.
Irani highlighted the transformative impact of sports in fostering confidence and inclusivity among children with disabilities, describing the event as a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing talent and creating opportunities.
"Honored to join the Special Needs Sports Competition organized by Higashi Autism School (HAS) on #InternationalDisabilitiesDay," Irani posted on X (formerly Twitter).
"It was inspiring to witness not only the incredible resilience and joy of children with special needs but also the painstaking dedication of the faculty and management at HAS. Their unwavering commitment to teaching, training, and nurturing these children reflects profound empathy and a vision for opening opportunities that every parent dreams of for their child," she added.

"This event beautifully showcased the transformative power of sports in fostering confidence, inclusivity, and empowerment. The Higashi Autism School (HAS) in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi is run by Higashi Autism Trust. HAS is a multi-department, campus-based day-boarding private Specialist School set up in collaboration with Musashino Higashi Gakuen School (MHS), Japan. This is the third Higashi School after Tokyo and Boston.

"Our objectives are to promote good learning outcomes, develop attention and interest-taking among autistic pupils thus paving their way for skill development and for engaging in programmatic learning throughout the day and work actions voluntarily," HAS's website notes.
