Delhi Assembly election 2025: The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections delivered an unexpected outcome, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing a decisive victory by winning 48 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to win only 22 seats. Meanwhile, Congress failed to win any seats, marking a significant political shift in the capital.

What’s even more surprising is that out of the 699 candidates contesting in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, 96 were women, including nine each from the BJP and AAP, and seven from Congress.

Low Representation of Women in Delhi Assembly 2025

A total of 699 candidates contested the Delhi Assembly elections this year, including 96 women candidates—nine each from BJP and AAP, and seven from Congress. Despite an increase in female candidates compared to the 2020 elections, only five women emerged victorious, the lowest female representation in the Delhi Assembly in the past decade.

Among them, Atishi, the only winning female candidate from AAP, retained her Kalkaji seat. The newly elected five women MLAs now make up just 7 per cent of the 70-member Delhi Assembly.

Women Voters Surpass Men in Turnout

For the first time since the Delhi Legislative Assembly was reconstituted in 1993, the city recorded a higher voter turnout among women (60.9 per cent) compared to men (60.2 per cent). On polling day, approximately 44.08 lakh of the 72.36 lakh registered women voters exercised their right to vote, reflecting increased female participation in Delhi's political landscape.

Women Candidates Who Won the 2025 Delhi Elections

1. Atishi (AAP - Kalkaji): Won by 3,521 votes, defeating BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri. She is among the few AAP leaders to secure a victory, as top figures like Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Satyendar Jain lost their seats.

2. Neelam Pahelwan (BJP - Najafgarh): Defeated AAP's Tarun Kumar with a massive lead of nearly 30,000 votes.

3. Rekha Gupta (BJP - Shalimar Bagh): Secured victory against AAP's Bandana Kumari by 29,595 votes.

4. Poonam Sharma (BJP - Wazirpur): Defeated AAP’s Rajesh Gupta by 11,425 votes.

5. Shikha Roy (BJP - Greater Kailash): Won by 3,188 votes, defeating incumbent Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj of AAP.

The 2025 Delhi Assembly elections marked a significant political shift, with BJP gaining a stronghold, AAP losing key leaders, and Congress failing to make a comeback. While female voter turnout was higher than men for the first time, women’s representation in the Assembly hit a 10-year low.
