After nearly 15 years, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the government in West Bengal after winning the Assembly election, defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC). As celebrations and political activity continue, incidents of post-poll violence and tension have been reported from several parts of the state. At least four people were reported to be killed following the declaration of results on May 4.

Bengal Sees Post-Poll Violence

Reports from multiple areas suggest clashes, vandalism, and isolated incidents of violence after the election results were declared. Some TMC offices were also allegedly attacked. According to The Telegraph report, in Kolkata, tension was reported after a school bus incident where children were allegedly forced to chant slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” on Wednesday, leading to a complaint from a parent.

Veteran TMC Leader Threatened

In another incident, a senior Trinamool leader and former parliamentary affairs minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay said he was threatened at his residence, prompting a police complaint. ‘A group of 10 men came to my house and started abusing me. The man who led them was employed by me several years ago. He threatened to kill me if I step out of my home. I have lodged a complaint with the Kalighat police station and informed the deputy commissioner of police south division,” he told the news outlet.

Bulldozer Action

In the New Market area, a TMC office, along with a chicken shop and a children’s clothing shop, was allegedly demolished using an earthmover machine by suspected supporters of the saffron party. Reports said the group was chanting “Jai Shri Ram” during the incident. Several videos claiming violence have also surfaced online.

BJP Leaders Appeal For Peace

Amid ongoing reports of violence, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya have appealed for peace and said that violence has no place in democracy. Adhikari said no one should take the law into their own hands, while Bhattacharya warned that any party worker involved in violence would face strict action.

West Bengal DGP Holds PC

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta addressed a press conference, stating that action has been taken against those involved in violence. He said, “We have lodged more than 200 FIRs. 433 people have been arrested in specific cases. More than 1100 people have been arrested under preventive sections. As a result, no untoward incident has taken place since this morning.”
