The Department of Posts has introduced Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN), a new digital addressing system which is aimed to provide precise location identification. Unlike conventional PIN codes that cover broad regions, DIGIPIN assigns a unique 10-digit code to accurately pinpoint the exact location of a property.
To obtain a DIGIPIN, users can visit a government website, locate their home, and generate a unique code that helps streamline deliveries and emergency services. Designed to improve efficiency in remote areas, the DIGIPIN system benefits online shoppers, logistics providers, and emergency responders by reducing errors and ensuring accurate, timely service. Users can share their DIGIPIN with platforms like Flipkart and Amazon for faster, more precise deliveries.
What Is DIGIPIN?
According to India Post, DIGIPIN is an open-source nationwide geocoded addressing system developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO. It divides the country into approximately 4m x 4m grids, covering homes, offices, and organisations, and assigns each a unique 10-character alphanumeric code based on latitude and longitude coordinates.
How Does DIGIPIN Work ?
To use DIGIPIN, visit https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home. This government website helps you locate your home or establishment and generate your unique 10-character DIGIPIN, which acts as a precise digital address for accurate deliveries and services.
DIGIPIN offers several key benefits, including precise location identification within a 4-metre square, ensuring greater accuracy for services. It enhances efficiency by streamlining deliveries and emergency response operations. The system promotes inclusivity by providing digital addresses even in areas without formal addressing systems. Additionally, DIGIPIN ensures user privacy by not storing any personal data.

Difference Between Pin Code And DIGIPIN
While a postal PIN code identifies a broader area like a locality or neighborhood, a DIGIPIN pinpoints a specific location, approximately 4m x 4m, such as a home, office, or organization, offering significantly greater precision in addressing.
