G20 Summit 2023 Delhi: A day ahead of the mega event, the Tibetan community on Friday staged a protest near Majnu Ka Tilla in New Delhi against the Chinese Government over its oppressive policies in Tibet. The demonstrators were seen protesting with posters and play-cards that read--‘Free Tibet’.

The protest was organized by the Tibetan Youth Congress. The protest was organised to draw attention to and denounce China's repressive policies in Tibet as well as the larger geopolitical issues related to China's expansionist activities that endanger not only India but also the surrounding nations, according to the Tibetan Youth Congress.

Following the demonstration by the Tibetan community, heavy security was deployed near Majnu Ka Tilla. "We had received a request for a protest called by the Tibetan Youth Congress. We denied their request, however, to have a peaceful situation in the area in terms of law and order and traffic we have made elaborate security arrangements..." DCP North Delhi Sagar Singh Kalsi told ANI.

Gonpo Dhundup, president of the Tibetan Youth Congress, said earlier on Thursday that the demonstration will serve as a reminder to the 19 G20 countries that China cannot be trusted. "We are not protesting against India hosting the G20. We are very proud that India is hosting this prestigious G20 meeting in New Delhi. But our protest is against the Chinese Communist Government. Chinese Government illegally occupied our nation. Currently, the situation in Tibet is very critical," Dhundup said as quoted by ANI.

India is all set to host the 18th meeting of the G20 Group from September 9 to 10. The two-day summit will be held at the newly built international convention and exhibition centre -- Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. Many heads of state including Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Bin Salman, US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will be attending the summit. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the meeting.
