As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan following the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, Pakistani netizens have taken to social media with humour and satire. While India’s retaliatory measures, suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, visa services and diplomatic ties, signal growing hostility, Pakistanis online are mocking their own government and preparedness in a string of memes and sarcastic posts.
Following the attack that left 26 Indian tourists dead, New Delhi announced stringent diplomatic and strategic steps. Among them, the potential revocation of the Indus Waters Treaty stands out as a move with serious implications for Pakistan’s agriculture and hydropower. The treaty governs the water supply from the Indus basin, which is vital to Pakistan’s economy, 80 per cent of its agricultural land depends on it and a third of its hydropower is generated from it.
Experts warn that a suspension could spark a severe water crisis in Pakistan, especially in Punjab and Sindh, affecting irrigation and worsening groundwater depletion and salinity issues.
Pakistanis Mock Their Government On Social Media
Instead of widespread panic, Pakistani internet users are expressing their frustration through humour, targeting their own government and the economic crisis they face. One viral meme showed a character screaming, ''Pani khol do, aankh mein sabun chala gaya hai,'' mocking the possibility of water scarcity.

Another user shared a meme portraying India threatening destruction, while Pakistan replied with, ''Mujhe barbaad hona hai'' (I want to be destroyed). Another user shared a meme suggesting that Pakistanis might now have to ask India for water to bathe.

A post sarcastically read, ''We have to pay the debt of half the world, so no one from India should attack us. Everyone go to sleep.'' Another remarked that the Pakistani government would prefer India to capture the country so it wouldn’t have to spend on citizens or seek more loans.
Reflecting the country's chronic power outages, a user joked: ''If there’s going to be a war, let it happen before 9.15am—gas goes off after that.'' ''They should know which poor country they’re fighting against,'' added another netizen, highlighting their dismal energy situation.

One more said mockingly, “Will you stop the water? There's already a scarcity. Will you kill us? Our government is already doing that. Take Lahore—you’ll return it in half an hour.”
As the risk of escalation looms, one user summed up the mood by sharing that both nuclear power countries are on the verge of armed conflict while Pakistanis are busy making memes.
