Guillain-Barre Syndrome: Maharashtra has recorded another death due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), bringing the total number of deaths to 6. 173 suspected cases have been identified across the state, with 140 confirmed cases of GBS, according to the latest update on Thursday.
The state's Health Department confirmed that 1 death was confirmed as a result of GBS, and 5 other deaths are suspected to be linked to the syndrome. Out of the 173 suspected cases, 34 were reported in Pune city, with 87 cases in Pune Municipal Corporation's newly added villages, and 22 each in Pune Rural and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The remaining 8 cases were from other districts. So far, 72 patients have been discharged, while 55 are in the ICU, and 21 are on ventilator support.
In response to the outbreak, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took immediate action by sealing 30 private water supply plants located in Nanded village, Dhayari, and nearby areas on Sinhgad Road in Pune. The closure followed the discovery of unsafe drinking water after water samples from these plants were found to be unfit for consumption.
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nervous system. It often occurs after an individual has been infected by certain bacteria or viruses. GBS causes weakness in muscles and a loss of sensation in the arms or legs, as well as difficulties with breathing, swallowing, and pain perception.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to avoid consuming unclean water and take necessary precautions.
