Multi-Storey Parking In GK: Residents of Delhi can look forward to a significant relief in parking woes, as a long-awaited multi-storey parking facility in Greater Kailash-1 (GK-1) is expected to open soon. The only hurdle standing in the way is the presence of 18 trees that are currently blocking the entry and exit points of the M Block shuttle parking structure. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is awaiting final approval from the Forest Department to either transplant or remove these trees, which could come through by the end of this week.

As per a report by Jagran.com, the MCD is keen to open the parking facility as soon as the necessary permissions are granted. The structure, which has already been completed since June, remains non-operational due to these obstructions.

What Is GK-1 Multi-Storey Parking Project?

The new parking facility in Greater Kailash is designed to accommodate up to 399 vehicles, a move that is expected to significantly ease congestion for shoppers and visitors in the busy M Block market area. The former Southern Corporation initiated the project in response to rising demand for parking space in the locality.

A senior MCD official highlighted a critical regulation delaying the opening: "As per the rules, there should be a minimum six-meter wide path for the movement of emergency vehicles. This path is not being made because of the trees coming in the way. Hence, it is very important to remove the trees from here."

He further explained that the department had submitted a request to the Forest Department nearly a year ago and is optimistic that the clearance will be granted within the week. Once approved, the corporation will seek a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the fire department to proceed further.

When Will Multi-Storey Parking In GK Open?

Multi-Storey Parking In GK is almost completed. Aside from the area around the trees, all construction work including electrification has been completed. The official confirmed that the parking facility has been built at a cost of Rs 63.7 crore. Spanning an area of 2,240 square meters, the structure includes eight storeys above the ground floor and uses a shuttle parking system with an automatic lift mechanism. This advanced technology allows for more efficient use of space and quicker parking and retrieval of vehicles compared to traditional methods.

The construction began in March 2022 and was originally scheduled for completion by September 2023. However, due to multiple delays, the timeline was extended. The project follows a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, under which the agency managing the construction will also operate the facility for the next ten years. Notably, 70% of the revenue generated will go to the corporation.
