India's worldwide rank in the Global Innovation Index has improved by 42 positions in the last 9 years, the latest 2024 report by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) stated on Thursday. According to the WIPO, India ranks 39th in the index in the current year, topping the list among 38 lower-middle-income economies.
In 2015, India was ranked at 81 position among 133 global economies on the innovation ranking which showcases their strengths and weaknesses in fostering innovation.
The Global Innovation Index 2024, released on Thursday ranks Switzerland as the world’s most innovative economy, maintaining its top position. Following closely are Sweden in second place and the United States in third. Singapore leads the Asia-Pacific region, coming in fourth, while the United Kingdom secures fifth. Other countries making the top ten include the Republic of Korea, Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark, showcasing a strong presence of European nations in the global innovation landscape.
India's Significant Improvement
Union Minister Piyush Goyal stated that this remarkable progress in the index is due to the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the country's focus on fostering an environment conducive to innovation.
In a social media post on 'X', the minister said, "Guided by PM @NarendraModi ji's decisive leadership, India achieves these remarkable milestones: 1st among 10 economies in Central & Southern Asia, 1st among lower-middle-income economies, 4th in @WIPO Science & Technology (S&T) Cluster Ranking."
Additionally, the minister noted that the country has been ranked first among 10 economies in Central and Southern Asia, further emphasizing its regional dominance in innovation. India has also secured the 4th position in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Science and Technology (S&T) Cluster Ranking.
