Goa Club Fire: A late-night fire at Goa’s popular nightclub Birch by Romeo Lane led to a major tragedy on Saturday, leaving at least 25 people dead. The incident occurred during a “Bollywood Banger Night” event, where nearly 100 guests were inside the club when a sudden blaze erupted near the dance floor around 1 AM.
Footage from the venue showed a performer dancing on stage moments before flames burst from a console behind her. At first, staff were seen trying to remove equipment and many visitors assumed it was a minor incident. However, the fire spread rapidly, filling the club with thick smoke and triggering panic as people rushed towards the exit.

As flames moved to the upper deck, musicians, staff members and guests tried to escape. While some reached the main entrance, others ran downstairs into the kitchen area and became trapped. Several of the victims later died of suffocation.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Narrow Lane
Firefighters faced severe challenges reaching the spot. The club is located on a narrow street where fire engines could not enter, forcing crews to stop nearly 400 metres away and carry equipment on foot. The single, narrow entry and exit point inside the club further slowed evacuation and many people were unable to escape before the smoke thickened.
CM Orders Inquiry, FIR Filed Against Club Management
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant called the incident a “very sad day” for the state. He said early findings suggested the fire originated on the upper floors and the compact doorways prevented many from escaping. The Chief Minister announced financial aid for the victims’ families and confirmed that a magisterial inquiry had been ordered. An FIR has been registered against the club owner and general manager, and arrest warrants have been issued.

PM Modi Expresses Grief
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and wished the injured a quick recovery.
Survivors Recall Chaos
Survivors recalled moments of chaos. Fatima Shaikh, a tourist from Hyderabad, said several temporary palm-leaf structures inside the club caught fire instantly, leaving people with little time to react.
Questions have also surfaced about the legality of the club’s construction. The Arpora-Nagoa Panchayat said the venue did not possess proper building permissions and earlier demolition orders were halted by senior officials.
