Goa Petrol Price Hike: A notice increasing the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel was released by the Bharatiya Janata Party government in Goa on Friday. The announcement stated that as of this Saturday, June 22, the price of petrol and diesel would increase by Re 1 per litre and Rs 0.35, respectively.
The state finance department increased the VAT on petrol to 21.5 percent and the VAT on diesel to 17.5 percent in a notification that was released.
The Congress government in Karnataka increased the price of petrol and diesel last week following a state revision to the sales tax. A gazette statement states that the government increased the sales tax on petrol and diesel by 29.84 per cent and 18.44 percent, respectively.
The price increase in Goa, which will take effect at midnight on June 21, has been criticised by the opposition.

Yuri Alemao, the Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition, has urged the Goa government to reverse the hike, which comes after the recent increase in electricity costs.
An increase in electricity rates from Rs.0.30 to Rs 0.90 was implemented earlier this month. Hitting out at Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Alemao said, “Lok Sabha elections are over and the insensitive BJP government increased VAT on fuel. Petrol price hiked by ₹1 per litre and diesel by 35 paise per litre. Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant must stop wasteful expenditure on events and adopt austerity measures.”
