According to the Petroleum Dealers Association, the price increase is due to the state government revising the sales tax on petroleum products. Notably, the price hike came days after the Lok Sabha elections concluded across the country and the results were announced on June 4.
Several people expressed their concern over the state government's decision to hike petrol and diesel prices.
"The rich can get petrol, where will we go? I work at a BPO. I will have to get petrol in Rs 15,000 salary...This will affect us greatly," a Bengaluru resident said while talking to ANI.
The move by Karnataka's Finance Department aimed at increasing the revenue of the state government, however, it will impose an additional burden on the retail consumer. The petrol and diesel price hike is likely to have an impact on other sectors as well due to increased costs of transportation and goods distribution.
