Government Employees Retirement Age: A circular has been doing rounds on social media platforms for days now, claiming that the Centre has agreed to raise the retirement age of central government employees by two years, from 60 to 62. The press release looks to be an official notification. The memo states that the new rule will apply to employees who retire after April 1, 2025. The post titled, "Retirement Age Increase 2024", further explained why this change is being implemented and how it will benefit the employees is also included.

It stated that the Government of India has made an important decision to raise the retirement age for central government employees by two years. This decision will help millions of government employees by allowing them to work till the age of 62. The decision was made in the best interests of personnel, who will be able to serve longer and offer their experience to the country's advantage.

However, government verification has revealed that the claim was false. On November 19, 2024, the government's fact-checking arm Press Information Bureau (PIB) emphasised that the Government of India had not made such a decision about the rise in retirement age. "The claim circulating on social media regarding the increase in the retirement age of central government employees is fake. There is no truth to this post," the clarification from PIB reads.

This particular instance shows the ongoing issue of misinformation distributed via social media platforms. While the letter circulating online appears well-written and even provides reasoning for the purported policy change, it serves as a reminder of how easily fake news may spread. The viral message not only misled employees but also informed the entire public about the government's policies.

Such false assertions can cause unnecessary confusion, especially when they entail major policy changes like retirement age revisions. Citizens must verify the information before believing or sharing it, especially if the source is not an official government outlet. It is critical to rely on legitimate sources for announcements and policy updates, such as the PIB or other official government channels, official Twitter account handles, official government websites, or respected news outlets that adhere to journalistic standards.
