In a shocking development, an elderly man was hacked to death by chopping off his legs by his five brother-in-laws after he went to meet his wife to reconcile with her in a marital dispute.
The horrific incident took place on Tuesday evening in Arjansukh village of Amreli district. Before the incident, the victim, named Dinesh (60) had gone to meet his wife's relatives to reconcile with her.
Seriously injured in the attack, Dinesh was first taken to Amreli Civil Hospital and then to Rajkot Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.
Dinesh had been married to a woman named Ratan for 35 years and was the father of three sons. He had left home about a month ago after a fight with his wife. On Tuesday, in an attempt to reconcile, he went to the home of his niece, Manisha, who lives in Arjunsukh village in Vadia tehsil.
In the FIR filed by Manisha, she stated that at 6:30 pm, two brothers-in-law, Kanji Savaliya and Haku Savaliya, arrived to try to mediate. While the conversation was ongoing, Manisha's husband went out to get tea and snacks. Things escalated, and Haku called the other brothers.
Following the call, Nanu, Bagha, Jadav, and three unidentified men arrived. Bagha was armed with an iron pipe, and Jadav had an axe. They all rushed inside, and Bagha struck Dinesh hard on the head with the pipe, knocking him to the ground.
Kanji and Haku stood guard outside while the others overpowered Dinesh. Jadav and the unidentified men chopped off both his legs with an axe. Manisha screamed for help, but was pushed out. The attackers fled in a car. Dinesh, injured, was immediately taken to Amreli Civil Hospital. Seeing his critical condition, doctors referred him to Rajkot, but he died during treatment on Wednesday morning.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Chirag Desai said Dinesh and his wife had been arguing for a month, leading to their estrangement. During reconciliation talks, his wife's brothers struck him on the head with a pipe and inflicted fatal injuries on his legs.
The Wadia police have registered a case against Kanji, Haku, Nanu, Bagha, Jadav, and three unidentified individuals under Section 103(1) of the Indian Penal Code, among others. A forensic team has been called to the scene, and a search is underway for the accused brothers. Police believe the attack is related to a marital dispute.
