A man in Gujarat threw slippers at a judge inside the Ahmedabad Sessions Court on Tuesday during proceedings, reportedly angered by the acquittal of four accused in a case he had filed. While the court chose not to register a complaint, police were informed and soon arrived at the scene, detaining the man.

"The person got angry and threw a shoe at the judge after his appeal was dismissed. Though he was caught by court staff, the judge let him go and instructed the staff that no action should be taken against him," inspector PH Bhati of the city's Karanj police station said, according to the NDTV report.

The Gujarat Judicial Services Association passed a resolution condemning the incident, stating that any attacks, threats, or acts of vandalism against the Supreme Court and the City Civil Court in Ahmedabad are strongly denounced.

"Such acts are a direct attack on the independence, dignity, security, and functioning of the judiciary. Courts must function free from fear, intimidation, or violence. Any intimidation or attack on judicial officers, court premises, or their infrastructure undermines the foundations of democracy and justice," the resolution said.

"The Association calls upon all concerned authorities, including the State Government, Home Department, Police, and Security Agencies, to ensure immediate and stringent security measures for the safety of judicial officers, court staff, and court buildings," it added.

What Was the Case Being Heard?

According to the NDTV report, the case dates back to 1997, when a man from Gujarat’s Gomtipur was hit by a cricket ball while buying vegetables, leading to a verbal dispute and a physical altercation with a group of young men.

He later filed a complaint against four individuals at the Gomtipur Police Station under several sections, including assault with a weapon. A chargesheet was filed, and the case proceeded to the Metro Court in 2009.

After years of hearings, the Metro Court acquitted all four accused on February 15, 2017. The petitioner challenged the verdict in the Sessions Court on May 19, 2017. However, after reviewing the case, the Sessions Court upheld the lower court’s decision and dismissed the appeal on October 13, 2025.

What Happened In The Courtroom?

Upset by the Sessions Court’s decision, the petitioner began shouting and misbehaving in court. Despite attempts to calm him, he threw his slippers at the judge in quick succession. The judge was unharmed, and court staff, along with police personnel, quickly restrained the man. Although the court chose not to file a complaint, police were informed and later detained him.
