The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for heavy rain in 11 districts across Gujarat, alongside a yellow alert for 22 additional districts. This weather is attributed to a deep depression affecting the region.
Rain Alerts Across Gujarat:
The IMD has raised a red alert for the Kachchh and Saurashtra regions, which includes the districts of Kachchh, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Morbi, Surendranagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Botad, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar. A yellow alert covers North, Central and South Gujarat.
In response to the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to evaluate the circumstances and pledged the Centre’s assistance to the state.
Although rainfall has ceased in Vadodara, several low-lying areas have experienced flooding after the Vishwamitri River overflowed its banks, affecting residential neighbourhoods.
Gujarat Weather: IMD Forecasts and Warnings
The IMD anticipates that the depression will likely exit the Kachchh and Saurashtra regions towards the Arabian Sea by August 30. However, a slight intensification may occur over the northeast Arabian Sea on the same day. Residents are warned of potential localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas and closures of underpasses, particularly in urban centres.
