Haryana News: Authorities investigating the drowning of a six-year-old girl at a wedding have uncovered a series of child murders, allegedly carried out by a woman, including the death of her own son. According to police, 34-year-old Poonam has confessed that she felt compelled to kill children she considered “more attractive” than her own.
According to a report by Times of India, Poonam murdered her own son out of fear that he had witnessed one of her previous killings. The other victims, children of her relatives, had their deaths mistaken to be accidents.
A ‘Disturbing Pattern’ Of Child Murders In Haryana
The 34-year-old Poonam was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the drowning of a six-year-old girl. Vidhi, a resident of Bhavar, had travelled with her family to attend a wedding in Naultha. Late Monday night, as the baraat was preparing to leave, Vidhi’s grandfather, Pal Singh, got a call that she was missing. Pal’s wife, Ompati, and Vidhi’s mother, Rakhi, began searching for her in the house and the surrounding areas.
In the early hours, when Ompati went to the first floor, she found the storeroom door locked from the outside. Upon opening the door, she found Vidhi lying face down in a plastic tub filled with water, the TOI report added. The child was immediately rushed to Israna Medical College, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Panipat SP Bhupendra Singh stated that on December 1, authorities received information that a six-year-old girl had drowned in a tub inside a house in Naultha village, about 15 km from Panipat. They interviewed all attendees at the wedding. During questioning, Vidhi’s aunt, Poonam, gave inconsistent statements, raising immediate suspicion among the officers.
According to police, Poonam allegedly lured the six-year-old girl into filling a tub with water and then drowned her. During interrogation, she reportedly confessed to murdering not only Vidhi but three other children, all of whom were similarly drowned in plastic tubs.
She killed her firstborn son, Shubham, in 2023 out of fear that he had witnessed one of her previous killings and would expose her. According to her statement, she also drowned her sister-in-law’s nine-year-old daughter, Ishika, in a water tank at their home in Bhavar in January 2023. Then, in August this year, she allegedly drowned her cousin’s six-year-old daughter, Jiya, at her maternal home in Siwah village. The deaths had initially been mistaken for an accident by the family.
