Haryana Police on Wednesday registered cases against Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) staff, including professors and security guards, after 20 students got injured in a cane charge during a protest against changes in scholarship norms on the campus.
As per Jagran.com, cases have been registered against the university's registrar, Pawan Kumar, Professor Radheshyam, Chief Security Officer (CSO) Sukhbir Singh, security guards Bijendra, Anoop, Jagmesh Poonia, Narendra and Suman. Sections of an attempt to commit culpable homicide have been added against all of them in the case.
Infuriated over the act and the administration's inaction in the lathi charge incident, students staged a protest at Gate Number 4 of HAU. Congress MLA from Adampur Chandraprakash, Naresh Selwal from Uklana, Jassi Petwad from Narnaund and BJP MLA from Nalwa Randhir Panihar reached the sit-in.
Political leaders, including former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda, Congress MP Kumari Selja, have condemned the act on X.
In the complaint given to the police, Dipanshu of village Bhagalpuri in Jhajjar district, who is undergoing treatment, said, “The students were sitting peacefully in front of the VC office on the issue of the reduction of scholarship and the reduction of LDV seats at around 10.30 am on June 10. At the same time, security guards– Bijendra, Anoop, Jagmesh Poonia, Narendra and female guard Suman– attacked them together.”
He also gave an account of another such incident in the evening, alleging that students were also beaten on VC’s order. “After that, at around 10.15 pm, the students were sitting peacefully near the residence of Vice Chancellor BR Kamboj. At that time, the Vice Chancellor's car came and following his orders, Registrar Pawan Kumar, Professor Radheshyam Manju, CSO Sukhbir Singh and the security personnel of the University attacked us,” the complaint added.
More than 20 students were injured in this incident.
According to the reports, the root cause of the unrest at the university is a change in the scholarship policy. Earlier, all students with a CGPA above 7.5 were eligible for scholarships. However, the university administration has now revised the policy to benefit only the top 25 per cent of students, as per Jagran.com.
