Maharashtra: 8 Dead, Red Alert in Coastal Districts

At least eight people lost their lives in Maharashtra due to rain-related incidents, mostly from lightning strikes, officials confirmed. The deaths were reported from multiple districts, including Mumbai, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Nashik, Sambhajinagar, Nandurbar, and Amravati. Another ten people have been injured.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Ratnagiri and Raigad, with orange alerts for Palghar, Thane, Sindhudurg, and the ghat areas of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur.

Rescue operations are underway, with NDRF and SDRF teams deployed to affected regions. Ratnagiri topped the rainfall charts with 88.1 mm, followed by Raigad with 65.3 mm. Heavy rainfall was also recorded in Thane, Yavatmal, and Sindhudurg.

Karnataka: Flooding, Landslides and River Swell Amid Heavy Rainfall

In Karnataka, continuous downpours disrupted life in several districts on Sunday, particularly along the coast. Dakshina Kannada was hit hardest, with rainfall between 110 mm and 210 mm in just 24 hours. Mangaluru saw 170 mm, while Panambur recorded 210 mm. Udupi district received about 50 mm.

The IMD issued an orange alert for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and more heavy rainfall.

Flooding was reported in several low-lying areas of Mangaluru, including Pumpwell, Bikarnakatte, Kaikamba, and Kankanady. Poor drainage worsened the situation as rainwater entered homes and businesses, damaging property and slowing down traffic. Buses from Bengaluru had to take alternate routes due to road flooding.

A landslide blocked National Highway-169 near Kettikallu in Belthangady taluk, disrupting connectivity. No injuries were reported, and clearance work is in progress.

Udupi district also faced flooding in areas like Brahmavar, Gundibail, Kalsanka, and parts of Kundapur taluk, whereroads and homes were waterlogged.
