Himachal Landslide: At least 15 people died after a massive landslide buried a private bus under heavy debris in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district on Tuesday. Relief operations are underway to rescue those trapped under the debris.

The incident reportedly took place near the Ballu Bridge, where a large amount of mud and rocks slid down from the hillside and crashed onto the vehicle. The force of the landslide engulfed the bus, making rescue operations challenging.

Visuals from the site of the incident show a JCB machine working continuously to clear massive piles of debris as rescue workers and several locals attempt to rescue those trapped beneath.

Emergency response teams, including personnel from the police, fire department, and disaster management authority, have arrived at the spot and are actively involved in clearing the debris and conducting rescue operations.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the loss of lives in a mishap and announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased. 

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed condolences over the tragic incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter). 

“The news of the devastating landslide near Balughat (Bhalla Bridge) in the Jhanduta Assembly constituency of Bilaspur district has shaken me to the core. In this massive landslide, tragic news has come of 10 people losing their lives after a private bus was caught in it, and there is apprehension that several others may be trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are ongoing at a war footing,” he wrote.

The Chief Minister said that he is in constant touch with the district administration and instructed officials to deploy all available resources to intensify rescue operations and ensure the safe recovery of those trapped. “I am in touch with the local administration and am continuously receiving moment-by-moment updates on the entire rescue operation. May God grant peace to the departed souls and provide strength to the grieving families. In this difficult time, I stand with all the affected families,” Sukhu added.
