Himachal Pradesh Weather Update : The weather in Himachal Pradesh witnessed a significant shift on Monday, bringing some respite from the biting cold. Sunshine throughout the day offered relief, and life has started returning to normal as snowfall came to a halt. More than 100 roads have been reopened for traffic, and drinking water schemes disrupted by the snow have also been restored.
Cold Wave Warning in Five Districts
The Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave warning for Una, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba, and Mandi districts. However, starting from January 1, the weather across most parts of the state is expected to remain clear, barring one or two isolated places.
Kuldeep Srivastava, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, stated that cold winds are likely to blow in certain areas on December 31. However, the new year will begin with pleasant and sunny weather across the state.
Road Restoration Underway
Following days of heavy snowfall, sunny skies returned on Monday, but normalcy is yet to be fully restored. As of Monday morning, over 300 roads, including three national highways, remained blocked due to snow accumulation. By the afternoon, more than 100 roads were reopened.
The administration and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working round the clock to clear the blocked routes. In Lahaul Valley, located in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, the BRO’s 94 RCC and 70 RCC companies are engaged in snow clearance. In Chamba district, five drinking water schemes, which were disrupted by the snowfall, have been successfully restored.
Temperature Drops Below Freezing in Many Areas
Extreme cold conditions continue to prevail in the state, with temperatures dipping below zero in several areas. The coldest night of the season was recorded in Tabo, Lahaul-Spiti, where the mercury plummeted to -15.5°C.
Other notable minimum temperatures recorded were:
- Kalpa (Kinnaur): -3.3°C
- Manali: -0.9°C
- Kukumseri: -12.3°C
- Seobag: -0.2°C
- Bharmour: -0.5°C
- Samdho: -11.7°C
- Shimla: 5.6°C
- Sundernagar was the warmest place on Monday, with a maximum temperature of 21.8°C.
Tourists Flock to Snow-Covered Destinations
Snowfall has turned Shimla and its surrounding tourist spots, such as Kufri, Narkanda, and Naldehra, into major attractions for tourists. Large crowds are gathering to enjoy the winter wonderland, adding to the charm of these destinations.
