The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) management is set to provide relief to passengers in the New Year by approving changes to its luggage policy. The matter was discussed during a Board of Directors (BoD) meeting held last week. The Board has authorised the Managing Director to issue the new guidelines, eliminating the need to present the proposal to the BoD again.

Previous Policy: High Costs For Unaccompanied

Luggage Under the previous policy, luggage charges were determined based on the specific type of item. Furthermore, sending unaccompanied goods was costly due to a tiered system. Sending up to 5 kg of goods without a passenger cost one-fourth of a passenger fare, while 6 to 20 kg cost half a fare. Sending 21 to 40 kg was charged equivalent to a full passenger fare, and sending 41 to 80 kg required paying the equivalent of two passenger fares. These rates are now being standardised to ensure fairness.

Background: Policy Drafted In 2023

The corporation originally formulated its luggage policy in 2023 and amended a specific clause in 2024. However, the management received frequent complaints regarding a lack of transparency in fare calculations. In response, the corporation formed a committee to address the issue. The committee's report was discussed in detail during the Board meeting.

Lower Fares And Uniform Rates

Under the new rules, minimal fares will be charged for transporting goods on buses. Management intends to implement a uniform fare structure for distances up to 40 kilometers. The committee has also incorporated feedback from drivers and conductors into this decision.

Himachal Road Transport Corporation Vice Chairman Ajay Verma said,"A proposal to amend the luggage policy was introduced in the Board of Directors meeting, and the BoD has approved it. The management has been instructed to issue detailed fresh guidelines regarding this."
