For the state's largest multi-super-specialty hospital, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), New Year 2026 brings a message of new hope, state-of-the-art technology, and improved healthcare facilities. The first three months of the new year will witness several transformative changes at IGIMS that will not only elevate the quality of treatment to new heights but also strengthen the trust of patients in Bihar. From robotic surgery to the full operation of the new hospital building, IGIMS is set to establish a new benchmark in the healthcare sector in 2026.
IGIMS Medical Superintendent Dr Manish Mandal stated that robotic surgery facilities will commence in the first quarter of the year across almost all major departments, including Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Cancer and Gynae-Oncology, Urology, Orthopedics, and Gastroenterology. Along with this, the full operation of the 500-bed new hospital building, which began partially last year, will also start. This will significantly increase the institute's treatment capacity, making state-of-the-art treatment available to patients within a single complex.
Robotic Surgery To Transform Treatment Experience
Robotic surgery is being viewed as a revolutionary change in medical science. According to Dr. Manish Mandal, this technology will make surgeries more precise, safer, and less risky. Smaller incisions will result in less pain and reduced blood loss, allowing patients to recover faster and return home sooner.
Additionally, the risk of infection will decrease significantly. The direct benefit of this is that beds will be vacated faster, allowing more patients to be admitted and treated. Success rates will increase, particularly in complex surgeries related to cancer, neurology, urology, gastroenterology, gynecology, and cardiothoracic departments. Patients will no longer need to look towards Delhi, Mumbai, or other major cities for the treatment of these serious ailments.
Capacity Boost With 12 Modular OTs And 60 ICU Beds
The introduction of 12 state-of-the-art modular operation theaters (OTs) and 60 ICU beds in the new hospital building will lead to a massive expansion in IGIMS's surgical and critical care capabilities. The modular OTs will feature infection control, superior ventilation, and modern equipment adhering to international standards.
This will allow even the most complex surgeries to be performed safely. The increased number of ICU beds ensures that critical patients will receive timely, life-saving treatment.
Medical Infrastructure To Be Strengthened With 80 New Faculty
The medical framework of IGIMS will be further empowered by the appointment of 80 new faculty members in specialty and super-specialty departments. This will not only ensure that patients have easier access to expert doctors but will also provide new momentum to teaching and research activities. The increased number of doctors will help balance the patient load in OPDs and wards.
Achievements Of 2025 Laid The Foundation for 2026
Dr Manish Mandal noted that the past year, 2025, was full of achievements for IGIMS. During the year, the 160-bed Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and emergency services were launched. The 500-bed new hospital became partially operational, with the construction of 12 modular OTs progressing rapidly. A robotic physiotherapy facility was introduced in the same building, providing special benefits to neuro and orthopedic patients.
In the Cardiology Department, a Biplane Cardiovascular Cath Lab was started for complex heart and neuro surgeries. Additionally, a Molecular Pharmacology Lab, a modular OT in the State Cancer Institute, and a Pediatric Oncology Ward were also inaugurated. The Critical Care Medicine ICU was expanded to 22 beds, providing better monitoring and treatment for critically ill patients.
Record Growth In Transplants And OPD
So far, over 1,000 corneal transplants and 160 kidney transplants have been successfully performed at IGIMS. These figures not only reflect the institute's medical capability but are also proof of the growing trust of patients. As a result of this trust, the daily OPD footfall now averages between 5,000 to 8,000 patients seeking treatment.

New Direction For Teaching, Training And Research
IGIMS has also made remarkable progress in the fields of medical education and research. MBBS seats have been increased from 100 to 150, while seats for PG, MCh, and DM in specialty and super-specialty courses have been doubled.
DNB courses have been started in Surgical Oncology and Endocrinology, while an MPT course has begun in the Physiotherapy Department. Arrangements have been made for soft skill training for PG students and Hospital Management training for faculty at IIM Bodh Gaya. The Ethics Committee has approved over 400 research projects, and more than 300 research papers have been published. Extramural funds have also been received from several national agencies, including ICMR and CSIR, further accelerating research work.

New Year 2026 is not just a change of calendar for IGIMS, but the beginning of a new era in healthcare services. With robotic surgery, cutting-edge OTs, increased ICU beds, new faculty, and a robust teaching-research system, IGIMS is rapidly moving towards becoming a trusted and high-tech medical hub not just for Bihar, but for all of Eastern India. This transformation will not only provide better treatment to patients but will also give a new identity to the state's healthcare system.
