In a surprise inspection conducted by the Telangana Commissioner of Food Safety on February 3, authorities discovered significant hygiene violations at two well-known restaurants in Hyderabad's Narayanaguda and Lakdikapul areas. Hotel Ashoka, a 3-star business-class hotel in Lakdikapul, was found to be in serious violation of food safety standards. The inspection team discarded multiple expired items, including, rosemary (expired in September 2023), several kilograms of curry-cut chicken and rotten brinjals.
Additionally, the team found synthetic food colors being used in meal preparations. The kitchen had unhygienic conditions, with dirty walls and floors, rusty utensils inside and outside the kitchen, and a severe cockroach infestation. Another major concern was the absence of a Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) trained supervisor, even though the establishment employs over 140 individuals. The hotel also failed to provide water analysis reports, which are crucial for maintaining water quality in food preparation.
On the same day, another inspection at Indian Durbar Restaurant, known for its diverse menu, revealed further violations. The restaurant had a severe cockroach infestation, use of synthetic food colors and lacked essential documentation such as medical fitness certificates for food handlers and pest control records.

The inspection team also found uncovered and unlabeled food items, along with boiled eggs stored near drains. Moreover, the restaurant failed to display its FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) license as required by law. Several expired food items were also discovered, including masala powder, cumin powder, hazelnut-flavored syrup (expired September 2024), peach-flavored syrup (expired March 2024), chilli flakes (expired March 2024).

This is not the first time food safety violations have been uncovered in Hyderabad. Earlier, the food safety task force inspected establishments in the Jubilee Hills area and found multiple violations at a restaurant and a bar.
