Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case: In a shocking twist to the chilling Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, Sonam Raghuvanshi broke down during a video call with her alleged boyfriend and confessed, “I got Raja killed.” The dramatic admission came days after she went missing, and has become the most disturbing detail yet in a crime that has stunned the nation.

Sonam, who was on the run for over two weeks after the mysterious disappearance of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, was arrested in the early hours of Monday following her surrender in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.

Apart from Sonam, three other individuals including her alleged lover Raj Kushwaha have been arrested in connection with the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, a businessman from Indore.

Following her arrest, a court in Ghazipur granted Meghalaya Police a three-day transit remand to take Sonam to the northeastern state for further investigation. She was produced in the CJM court late on Monday night.

Indore’s Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Dandotia informed that Raj Kushwaha, Vishal Chauhan, and Akash Rajput: the three other accused were arrested by Meghalaya Police and presented before a Chief Judicial Magistrate in Indore. All three were remanded to seven-day transit custody.

Key Developments in the Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case:

  • Sonam, missing since May 23, surrendered to Ghazipur Police in Uttar Pradesh. She was arrested at around 1 am on Monday.
  • Late at night, Additional Police Commissioner (Law) Amit Singh reached the DCP’s bungalow on a bike and began questioning the accused. During interrogation, Raj admitted to being in a relationship with Sonam but completely denied involvement in Raja’s murder. Officers took separate statements from both.
  • The Nandganj Police in Ghazipur informed senior officials that Sonam was located at Kashi Dhaba, though she was reportedly not in a condition to give a statement.
  • During Raj’s interrogation, officers asked him to make a video call to Sonam. Initially, she avoided questions, but later broke down and admitted: “I got Raja killed,” reported Jagran.com.
  • According to Indore Additional DCP Rajesh Dandotia, Sonam conspired with her ex-partner, Raj Kushwaha, to eliminate her husband. He added that the plot was hatched on May 18, just a week after the couple’s wedding on May 11.
  • Raj Kushwaha, 20, worked in a tile distribution company owned by Sonam’s brother. Police say he orchestrated the murder and recruited three men to carry it out: Vishal Chauhan, Anand Kumar, and Akash Rajput.
  • All three were reportedly present in the area on May 23, the day Sonam and Raja were last seen.
  • Kushwaha and Chauhan were arrested in Indore, while Anand Kumar was apprehended in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh.
  • Investigators used Sonam’s call records to trace her involvement. It showed frequent communication with Kushwaha before and during the honeymoon trip.
  • Police allege that Sonam shared the couple’s live location with the hired killers, effectively leading them straight to Raja, as per HT.
  • Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was discovered on June 2 in a deep gorge near Wei Sawdong Falls in Sohra, Meghalaya. His smartwatch and a tattoo with his name “Raja” on his hand were used to confirm his identity.
  • According to Meghalaya SIT Chief Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor, Raja had suffered two fatal head injuries, likely caused by a sharp weapon.
  • Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, alleged that Sonam insisted on planning the honeymoon and took ₹9 lakh from Raja to book flights and hotels. Sonam also demanded they carry all gold jewellery, valued over ₹10 lakh, for the trip.
  • The couple left for Meghalaya on May 20, nine days after their wedding, for what was meant to be a honeymoon. They arrived in Mawlakhiat village on May 22 on a rented scooter.
  • Just two days later, on May 24, the scooter was found abandoned outside a café along the Shillong-Sohra road. This sparked the launch of a major police investigation.
  • A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Meghalaya Police, led by a Superintendent of Police and supported by four DSPs, was formed to handle the high-profile case.
  • Uma Raghuvanshi said Sonam's behaviour never aroused suspicion. She said Sonam didn’t reject the marriage but began avoiding conversations with Raja afterward. Raja had confided that Sonam seemed disinterested and stopped engaging with him unless pressured by her sister-in-law.
  • Police confirmed that Raj Kushwaha’s number appeared far more often than Raja’s in Sonam’s call records. The two would talk for hours even after her marriage.
