IMD September Forecast: The monsoon rain fury is likely to continue across India in September as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday forecasted above normal rainfall.

The September rainfall will cap the monsoon season, which has already seen heavy rainfall-induced disasters in several parts of the country.

According to the weather department forecast, the monthly average rainfall this September will exceed 109 per cent of the long-term average of 167.9 mm.

The IMD forecast suggests that most regions will receive normal to above-normal rainfall in India, except for a few areas in the northeast and east region, and many parts of extreme southern peninsular India and some pockets of northwest India, which will receive below-normal rainfall.

Addressing an online press conference, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra warned that the heavy rainfall in September can trigger landslides and flash floods in Uttarakhand, as many rivers originate in the state. Moreover, it can disrupt normal life in other states, including South Haryana, North Rajasthan, and Delhi.

"Many rivers originate in Uttarakhand. So, heavy rainfall means many rivers will be flooded, and it will impact cities and towns downstream. So, we should keep this in mind," he said.

He added that heavy rainfall is also expected in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi River in Chhattisgarh.
