IMD Weather: Severe cold is set to return to North India, with heavy snowfall in the mountains and rain accompanied by strong winds in the plains. According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the weather will change from January 22 due to the activation of two consecutive western disturbances.

According to IMD, an intense western disturbance will become active on the night of January 21, with its effects becoming evident from January 22. A second, more potent system could then arrive around January 26-28.

IMD has also forecast rain in six states within the next two days. This list includes Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana.

What Will Happen In Hilly Areas?

-Widespread rain and snowfall likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from January 22 to 26.
On January 22-23, there may be heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley and on January 23 in the high altitude areas of Himachal-Uttarakhand.

-Due to this, the cold wave will intensify in the mountains, tourist places like Gulmarg, Manali, Shimla may be covered with a white sheet due to heavy snowfall.

-Temperatures in Kailash and Kedarnath in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, have dropped to minus 21 degrees Celsius. Waterfalls have frozen in many places. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy snowfall in the hill states.

Impact In Plains

-Light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds (30-50 kmph) are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and -parts of Rajasthan during January 22-24.

-Light rain in Delhi on January 23 with temperature dropping, minimum temperature may hover around 6-9°C.

-Amid the bitter cold, fog is wreaking havoc in Bihar. Clouds have enveloped several districts, including Aurangabad. The dense fog is also delaying some trains in Bihar.

Reason Behind Rise In Temperatures

Daytime temperatures had risen over the past few days due to a weakening western disturbance and clear skies, but now, with a new system arriving, cold is set to intensify. The IMD has warned of drizzle in the western Himalayan region over the next seven days, and issued a cold and fog alert for the plains.

Delhi-NCR Weather

Meteorologists say the rain will reduce pollution, but cold winds blowing from the northwest could cause temperatures to drop again. This means that after the rain and snow, another cold spell could return, possibly as intense as last week's.

In the coming days, North India will once again experience a biting winter, with changes in all weather elements including wind, clouds, fog, humidity, and temperature. According to IMD, the weather will change with strong winds in both eastern and western parts of Uttar Pradesh from January 23.

Delhi-NCR is currently experiencing some respite from this season's harsh winter. The minimum temperature remained above 7 degrees Celsius, and the day temperature has reached around 26 degrees Celsius.
