After Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged voter deletion in Karnataka's Aland constituency, the Chief Election Officer (CEO) of the state responded to it, saying that incorrect applications were rejected by them, and an FIR was filed in the matter in 2023.
In a statement, the Karnataka CEO said that the ERO in Aland received 6,018 Form 7 applications during December 2022. These applications were submitted online using multiple applications, including NVSP, VHA, and GARUDA.
The poll body said that each application was verified, as such a large number of online applications seemed suspicious. "Only 24 applications were found to be genuine, and another 5,994 were found to be incorrect. Accordingly, 24 applications were accepted and 5,994 incorrect applications were rejected and not deleted," the statement read.
Based on the findings of the inquiry, the Karnataka CEO further stated that the ERO filed a complaint with the Aland Police Station in Kalburgi district.
"Based on the instructions given by ECI, the CEO, Karnataka, has handed over to the Superintendent of Police, Kalaburagi district, on 06.09.2023, all the available information with ECI for completing the investigation," the statement added.
BJP's 'shameful jibe at Rahul Gandhi
After the Karnataka CEO's clarification, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slammed Rahul Gandhi, saying that the poll body exposed his lies.
Reacting to the Karnataka CEO's statement, BJP leader Amit Malviya said, "CEO Karnataka exposes Rahul Gandhi’s lies. What a steep fall for the Leader of Opposition — the same man who openly declared that it is not his responsibility to defend India’s democracy.Shameful."
Earlier in the day, BJP MP Anurag Thakur held a press conference and slammed Rahul Gandhi. He alleged that Congress wants to create situations like Nepal and Bangladesh in India.
"While the Election Commission of India is functioning without bias, Rahul Gandhi is busy weakening democracy, misleading citizens, and trying to create a situation like Bangladesh and Nepal," Thakur said.
