Independence Day 2024: Today, India celebrates its 78th Independence Day on August 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the festivities by hoisting the national flag at the historic Red Fort in Old Delhi. Following the flag hoisting, he will address the nation and a parade featuring security and defence personnel will take place at the fort.

In anticipation of the celebrations, security across India has been heightened. Over 10,000 police officers have been deployed in Delhi alone. Facial recognition technology and snipers are being positioned at crucial security points. Checkpoints have been established throughout central Delhi and thorough checks will be implemented.

Delhi Traffic Advisory On August 15

Delhi Police have issued traffic advisories to ensure safety and manage order in the national capital. "All borders of the capital, including those from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, will be sealed after 11:30 PM on Wednesday for heavy commercial vehicles. Any vehicles entering the city will undergo strict checks," reported a senior police official.

What Is Closed On Independence Day In Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru

As Independence Day is a national holiday, most shops and establishments in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad will be closed for the first half of the day. Banks, financial institutions and the stock exchange—NSE and BSE—will not operate on August 15. Educational institutions including schools and colleges will also remain shut.

Liquor Shops Closed On August 15

Additionally, August 15 is a dry day, meaning that liquor shops and establishments serving alcohol will not be permitted to operate. Government offices, monuments, and other public institutions will likewise remain closed.

What Is Open On Independence Day 2024

However, essential services will continue to function. Emergency services, including police stations, hospitals and fire departments, will remain operational. Public transport will run on a regular schedule, although some routes may be adjusted during the early hours of the day. Malls and restaurants will stay open, but they will not serve alcohol. -
