The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday responded to the recent sanctions imposed by the United States on more than a dozen Indian companies, which are accused of having ties to Russia in the context of its ongoing war with Ukraine. The MEA's statement comes as tensions escalate regarding international trade and geopolitical alliances amid the conflict.
The US Treasury Department on Wednesday imposed sanctions targeting nearly 400 firms and individuals across 17 countries, labelling them as ‘Third-Country Sanctions Evaders’. Among those sanctioned were 19 Indian companies, which the US claims have been providing assistance to Russia amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
“The United States and our allies will continue to take decisive action across the globe to stop the flow of critical tools and technologies that Russia needs to wage its illegal and immoral war against Ukraine,” Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo said.
In a press conference on Saturday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted India's commitment to stringent non-proliferation policies. He stated that India has a strong legal and regulatory framework governing strategic trade and non-proliferation controls. Additionally, he noted that India is a member of important multilateral export control regimes and effectively enforces relevant United Nations Security Council sanctions, including Resolution 1540 concerning non-proliferation.

"Our understanding is that the sanctioned transactions are not in violation of Indian laws. We are in touch with the US authorities to clarify issues," Jaiswal added.
MEA Confirms Ongoing Outreach Events On Export Control For Indian Industries
Jaiswal further stated that India is collaborating with various departments and agencies to educate Indian companies about export control regulations and new measures that could affect them, reinforcing the country's commitment to non-proliferation standards.
“Regular strategic trade/export control outreach events for Indian industries and stakeholders are being carried out by agencies of the Government of India. We are also in touch with the US authorities to clarify issues,” MEA said in its statement.
