India Canada News: India on Saturday expressed strong objections to what it called "absurd" and "baseless" allegations by a Canadian Minister linking Home Minister Amit Shah to violence in Canada, particularly the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned a representative from the Canadian High Commission, protesting statements made by Deputy Minister David Morrison before Canada’s parliamentary committee on public safety and national security.
MEA termed the deliberate leaking of the unfounded insinuations to the international media by Canadian officials, a part of a conscious strategy to discredit India and influence other nations.
"Regarding the latest Canadian target, we summoned the representative of the Canadian High Commission yesterday... It was conveyed in the note that the Government of India protests in the strongest terms to the absurd and baseless references made to the Union Home Minister of India before the Committee by Deputy Minister David Morrison," MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said while speaking at a weekly presser in New Delhi.
"The revelation that high Canadian officials deliberately leak unfounded insinuations to the international media as part of a conscious strategy to discredit India and influence other nations only confirms the view that the government of India has long held about the current Canadian government's political agenda and behavioural pattern. Such irresponsible actions will have serious consequences for bilateral ties," he added.

India's reaction followed a report by a US newspaper which quoted Canada's deputy foreign affairs minister David Morrison to confirm a senior Indian minister behind the violence in the country. The minister also made the disclosure at a hearing by the Canadian parliamentary committee.

However, no evidence or incriminating material was provided by the Canadian Minister in naming Home Minister Amit Shah as one of the conspirators behind the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar or any other incident.
Nijjar, a designated terrorist, was living in Canada's British Columbia when he was killed in a shooting incident outside a gurudwara in Surrey in June 2023.
