Jagran Bureau, New Delhi: Amid the new political situation that has emerged after the assembly election results in five states, the Opposition INDIA alliance's meeting on Monday has been called to corner the Modi government on key issues ranging from the NEET-UG paper leak, CBSE OSM flaws to the rising prices of petrol and diesel.
But there is no doubt that after the recent election results, in view of the turmoil within some regional parties of the Opposition camp including Trinamool Congress (TMC), the main Opposition party Congress faces the double challenge of keeping the INDIA alliance on political track.
After the changed equations in Tamil Nadu, DMK has already announced that it will not attend the INDIA meeting and after the increased bitterness in the Kerala election, the Left parties are also unhappy with the Congress.
Amid all this, Congress claimed unity among the Opposition parties and said that like India, INDIA alliance stands united with its diversity and 23 parties will participate in the meeting to be held on Monday.
Congress Communications General Secretary Jairam Ramesh also admitted that some parties will not participate in it. He took to social media platform X that the meeting of Opposition parties will be held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi at 12 noon.
He said, "Some parties have expressed their inability to attend this special meeting for their own reasons. However, they have strongly opposed the policies and actions of the Modi government, which are depriving millions of Indians of their right to vote, attacking the Constitution daily, and targeting opposition leaders through investigative agencies."
"It is seriously harming the livelihoods of millions of Indians. It is ruining household budgets through persistent inflation. It is betraying the hopes and aspirations of millions of young people. It is weakening the investment climate and compromising national interests through its foreign policy,” he added.
By mentioning these issues, Jairam Ramesh made the agenda of the meeting of Opposition parties clear and hinted at their strategy to corner the Modi government.
Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha leader Derek O'Brien, tagging Jairam's post, confirmed his party's participation, saying, "INDIA united in a meeting with a common purpose and clear intention. Many parties are looking forward to the meeting in a spirit of mutual brotherhood."
Following Mamata Banerjee's defeat in West Bengal, there has been political disunity and uproar within the Trinamool Congress. Therefore, the TMC, under the guise of an Opposition alliance, is seeking to stem this surge.
Given the challenges posed by the recent state elections, the Opposition alliance is already recognising the need to discuss its future strategy with an eye on the 2029 Lok Sabha election. Mamata Banerjee desperately needs the Congress party's support at the moment, but the support of the DMK and the Left parties at the national level is equally important for the Congress.
Following Stalin's defeat in Tamil Nadu, Congress immediately broke its two-decade-old alliance with the DMK in the state, supporting TVK leader Vijay as Chief Minister. Despite the DMK's Dravidian and anti-BJP politics, Congress considers the DMK close to the Opposition camp at the national level, but Stalin has expressed his displeasure by announcing his withdrawal from the INDIA meeting.
Similarly, the CPI(M) is upset over the allegations of top Congress leaders that the Left parties are in collusion with the BJP in Kerala and party general secretary MA Baby has recently written a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge seeking clarification on this.
