A day after the US 'captured' Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, India on Sunday stated that it has been monitoring the situation closely, further calling the recent developments "concerning". In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised the stakeholders to address the situation peacefully through dialogue. The ministry asserted that the centre is in contact with the Indian community in Venezuela, further assuring assistance to them. Apart from this, several Indian leaders have criticised the act by the US, citing violations of international laws.

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the MEA said. It further asserted that the conflict should be addressed peacefully to ensure peace and stability in Latin America. “India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela. We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” the ministry added.

“The Embassy of India in Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance,” it further emphasised.

Indian Leaders React

While citing the international laws, several leaders, including Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor and Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC, described the attack on Venezuela as "bullying". Earlier on Saturday, US President Donald Trump stated that the Venezuelan president will face trial in the US, adding that they have been accused of "drug trafficking and narco-terrorism conspiracies" in New York.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shashi Tharoor stated that the US has violated international laws by attacking its neighbouring nation. "International law and the UN Charter have for some years now been honoured in the breach, @kapskom. The Law of the Jungle prevails today. 'Might is Right' is the new creed," Tharoor stated in his post. Apart from this, Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi defined the act as "imperial-style" politics.

"Regime change by cruise missile, democracy delivered by warship, & sovereignty rewritten under self-styled Doctrine? Not leadership, this is 19th-cen imperialism in 21st-cen jargon. If international law matters only 2 weak, UN should shut shop. world deserves rules, not lunatic rulers," Singhvi stated in his post.

Apart from this, Shaina NC stated that the attack should be taken seriously, adding that no country should have the right to bully other nations. "No country can go around bullying the world; the situation must be viewed holistically. The global community today is worried about such actions, surgical strikes, and, above all, the safety of citizens, which must be seen from a collective global perspective,” the Shiv Sena leader was quoted as saying by PTI.

However, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi stated that India should conduct a similar attack against the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind, Masood Azhar. "If Trump can send his forces and capture the Venezuelan leader (referring to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro), then why can't PM Modi send our army to Pakistan and capture the attackers of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack Masood Azhar, if Trump can do it, so can you (Modi)," Owaisi stated.
