India Pakistan Tensions: The developments post-terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed hint that the new nuclear powers - India and Pakistan are heading to a military confrontation which may trigger a full-fledged war. Despite growing appeals from the international community for the declaration of tensions, the situation is worsening as Pakistan remains in denial of sponsoring terrorism against India. The war not only causes the loss of numerous human lives but also the economy. The war may sound like a thrilling word but it left a trail of destruction. It also damages the economy severely, pushing the economy of the fighting sides decades behind.
Rs 1,460 Crore - Rs 5,000 Crore Per Day Expenses
Now, the question is what is the cost of a war? The cost of war totally depends on its scale. It may vary from country to country. In the India vs Pakistan scenario, a short-term conventional war, according to the 'Foreign Affairs Forum', could cost India between Rs 1,460 crore and Rs 5,000 crore per day in direct military expenses. The Foreign Affairs Forum (faf.ae) is a UAE-based non-profit network that monitors global developments on key topics related to Great Decisions daily.
Economic Loss On Long Term War
The Foreign Affairs Forum said a prolonged conflict, when accounting for broader macroeconomic impacts, could lead to economic losses exceeding Rs 1.34 lakh crore daily.
India Vs Pakistan Economies
According to the IMF, India's GDP growth in 2025 is 6.2 per cent. India's GDP is valued at USD 4.39 trillion, the fourth-largest economy globally. Whereas Pakistan's economy remains fragile. Pakistan's GDP growth rate is 2.6 per cent and its GDP value is USD 337.75 Billion (World Bank Data).
Civil Defence Exercise And Rehearsal Across India
Meanwhile, in a boost to civil defence preparations amid tensions with Pakistan, the Union Home Ministry decided to organise Civil Defence Exercise and Rehearsal across 244 categorised districts on May 7.
The primary objectives of the mock drill include assessing the effectiveness of air raid warning systems, operationalisation of hotline, radio communication links with IAF, testing functionality of control rooms and shadow rooms, training of civilians including students on civil defence aspects to protect themselves in the event of hostile attack and provision of crash blackout measures.
UN Security Council urges India-Pakistan talks on Kashmir
The United Nations Security Council has urged India and Pakistan to ease tension and avoid military conflict, Pakistan said on Tuesday, as hostilities between the nuclear-armed rivals surge after a deadly attack on tourists in disputed Kashmir.
Council members were briefed on the situation in the region and told of intelligence indicating an "imminent threat" of action by India, the South Asian nation's foreign ministry said, referring to the council's meeting on Monday in New York.
What Is India and Pakistan's Stand On Pahalgam Terror Attack?
India accused Pakistan of involvement, saying two of the three suspected attackers were Pakistani nationals. Islamabad has denied the accusation but says it is fully prepared to defend itself in case of attack, prompting world powers to call for a calming of tension. Pakistan has held two missile tests in three days, provoking India. On the other side, India unveiled plans for civil defence drills in several states, from sounding air raid sirens to evacuation plans.
