India-Canada Row: Amid diplomatic tensions between the two countries, India has decided to resume visa services in Canada for selective categories, the Indian High Commission said in Ottawa on Wednesday. According to the official statement, the services will resume for entry visa, business visa, medical visa, and conference visa. It will come into effect from Thursday, October 26.

"After a considered review of the security situation that takes into account some recent Canadian measures in this regard, it has been decided to resume visa services for the following categories with effect from October 26, 2023," the official statement from the Indian High Commission said.

"Emergency situations will continue to be addressed by the High Commission and the Consulates General as it is being done currently," it added.

The development came after Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said visa services to Canada could resume if India sees progress in the safety of Indian diplomats in Canada.

On September 21, India suspended visa services for Canadian nationals due to escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations. The already strained relationship between India and Canada hit rock bottom when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that the Indian government was involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. It came after both nations' tit-for-tar expulsion of diplomats, which heightened tensions even more.

Candian PM claimed that his government had credible evidence linking the murder of Nijjar to Indian agents. However, India rejected the allegations levelled by Trudeau while calling them "absurd" and "motivated".

Recently, Trudeau said that Canada remains committed to developing stronger relations with India despite putting allegations over the murder of Khalistani terrorists. Canada's PM said that it is "extremely important" for Canada and its allies to preserve their connections with India in view of the country's growing significance in the world.
