India reacted sharply to the vandalization of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan temple in Sacramento in US' California on September 24. The temple was desecrated with anti-Hindu messages. The messages included phrases such as "Hindus go back," prompting concerns among the local Hindu community.
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco, in a post on X said, "The Consulate General of India, San Francisco strongly deplores the act of vandalism which took place on September 24th night at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California. @cgisfo has taken up the matter with local authorities to take immediate action against those responsible".
According to the sheriff deputies, the vandals had also cut water lines at the property. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies were called to the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Mather, near Rancho Cordova, where they found the graffiti. I
Meanwhile, this is not the first case of vandalisation of a Hindu Temple. On September 17, 2024, BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in New York was also vandalised. The Consulate General of India in New York had also condemned the vandalism of the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Melville, New York, labelling it "unacceptable."
Several US lawmakers also condemned the desecration of BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in New York's demanded accountability from the authorities.
Congressmen also raised concerns about repeated incidents of hate and violence in the country.
Indian-American Congressman Shri Thanedar strongly condemned the "hideous act" and stressed that such acts of "vandalism, bigotry, and hate" must be fully investigated.
