Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Thursday said that India and the United States have made significant progress toward concluding an interim bilateral free trade agreement, which is now in its final stages. The development comes following high-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit in France.
Progress in Trade talks
In a press briefing, Misri noted that the agreement was a key topic of discussion during the recent meeting between PM Modi and Trump in Evian, where both leaders instructed their teams to expedite its completion. Misri also confirmed that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will visit India next week to advance the ongoing negotiations.
Modi-Trump Talks at G7
He said, “With the United States, we have made significant progress already on the conclusion of an interim free trade bilateral trade agreement. We are in the final stages of concluding that agreement. Next week in fact the United States trade representative Mr Jamieson Greer will be visiting India to take forward these discussions. In the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister and President Donald Trump yesterday in Evian, this was a major subject of discussion. Both leaders once again gave instructions for this agreement to be concluded at the earliest possible.”

He further noted that the recent bilateral meeting between both the leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit took place in a cordial atmosphere after a gap of nearly sixteen months. Misri emphasised that although the Prime Minister had last visited the US in February, and neither leader had met since then, the opportunity at the G7 allowed them to engage directly and discuss key issues of mutual interest.
US Trade Representative visit confirmed
Misri added that both leaders focused on strengthening bilateral ties and gave clear instructions to advance the ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement. He said the proposed deal is an important priority for both sides and should be moved forward at the earliest.
“During the meeting, both leaders gave instructions regarding a bilateral trade agreement between the two countries, which is a very important topic at this time. They said that we should move this agreement forward as quickly as possible. Consequently, next week, the US Trade Representative is visiting India and will meet with the Commerce Minister to take this conversation forward,” Misri added.
