India-US Trade Talks: As India and the US look to normalise their bilateral relations, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch, is set to arrive in India for US-India trade talks. Lynch will meet India’s chief negotiator, Rajesh Agrawal, who is the special secretary in the Department of Commerce, on Tuesday, September 16.
Earlier, the US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick assured that ties will improve between the nations. Agarwal anticipates that the talks with Brendan Lynch will “fast-track” the trade talks, which have been in a state of limbo ever since the time of Trump tariffs. However, Agarwal refused to divulge any more details to the media. Lynch will be on a one-day visit to New Delhi.
Will This Be The Sixth Round Of Talks Between India And US?
So far, both India and the US have held five rounds of negotiations for the India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA). The sixth round of talks, which was scheduled to take place from August 25 to 29, was rescheduled following the imposition of 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods by the US.
Political and trade experts who are following the development between the two countries have speculated that this would be the sixth talk between the two nations. Responding to the speculations, Rajesh Agarwal told the reporters, “Tomorrow, we will be holding talks to see what can be worked out. It will not be the sixth round of negotiations but rather discussions on the trade talks and trying to see how we can reach an agreement between India and the US.”
However, Agarwal has hinted at the fact that the talks with the Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia can prove to be the precursor to the sixth bilateral trade agreement (BTA).
Lynch oversees the development and implementation of US trade policy for about 15 countries in the region. This includes management of the US-India Trade Policy Forum (TPF) as well as coordination of activity under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreements (TIFAs) with regional partners.
