Diwali/Chhath Special Trains: The Central Government announced over 1,100 trains to run from Pune and Mumbai to meet the passenger rush owing to Diwali and Chhath Puja, as per an official press release by the Central Railways and Southern Railways. The series of festive travel in September will require more train services to meet the rush and make travel smoother and comfortable for passengers heading home. 

1,126 Special Trains From Mumbai And Pune

The Central Railway (CR) is scheduled to run 1,126 special trains this year originating from Mumbai, Pune, and nearby places. Already, 944 trains have been scheduled earlier, with an additional 182 trains to meet the heightened demand.  

Some of the major routes are: 

  • Mumbai-Danapur

  • Mumbai-Banaras

  • Mumbai-Mau

  • Mumbai-Karimnagar

  • Pune-Amravati

  • Pune-Sanganer

Bookings started from September 14, 2025 (Sunday) through both IRCTC online and reservation counters. Passengers have been advised to book tickets at the earliest, because of the rising demand for AC and Sleeper class coaches.

Southern Railways: Festival Special For Chhath

The Southern Railway (SR) has also opened up many trains for the Chhath Puja. One of the major trains is the Madurai Junction-Barauni Junction Festival Special:

  • Train No. 06059 (Madurai-Barauni): Leaves Madurai at 8:40 PM every Wednesday from September 10 to November 26, 2025. The train reaches Barauni on the fourth day, offering crucial connectivity for migrant workers and families returning home.

  • Train No. 06060 (Barauni-Madurai): Departs Barauni at 11:00 PM every Saturday between September 13 and November 29, 2025, and arrives in Madurai in the early morning of the fourth day.

Bi-Weekly Special 

Central Railways have also announced bi-weekly special services from different stations:

  • Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Danapur Bi-Weekly Special (40 Services) from September 27 to December 3.

  • Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) and Mau (40 services) from September 26 to December 2. 

  • Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)–Banaras Bi-Weekly Special (40 Services) from September 24 to November 29. 

  • Pune–Sanganer Bi-Weekly Special (26 Services) from September 25 to November 7.  

Weekly Specials

  • Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)–Karimnagar Weekly Special (6 Services) from September 23 to October 8.

  • Pune–Amravati Weekly Special (16 Services) from October 7 to November 26.

  • Pune–Sanganer Weekly Superfast Special (14 Services) from September 26 to November 8. 

The Indian Railways apparently wants to manage the crowd from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand by opening these weekly and bi-weekly trains so that the passenger rush is maintained.
